COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH SENDS CLEAR MESSAGE TO SPEEDING DRIVERS IN RUTLAND

The Community Speed Watch Scheme, which allows Rutland residents to report speeding in their communities, has now closed for 2025, with Leicestershire Police issuing a total of 638 letters of caution to motorists across participating areas.

The scheme is a joint initiative between local communities and the following partner organisations for the Safer Rutland Partnership:

  • Leicestershire Police
  • Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland Road Safety Partnership (LLRRSP)
  • Rutland County Council

This effective and successful initiative, coordinated by Rutland County Council, provides local volunteers with the training and equipment they need to monitor traffic, record vehicle speeds and submit details of vehicles travelling above local speed limits.

Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the LLRRSP said:

“While we are incredibly grateful to Community Speed Watch volunteers for their continued commitment and hard work, it remains disappointing that so many drivers continue to exceed speed limits in Rutland’s communities."

“Excessive speed significantly increases the risk of death and serious injury to innocent road users and has a negative impact on quality of life in our rural villages."

With support from Leicestershire Police, warning letters are sent to registered keepers of vehicles observed speeding. These letters advise drivers of the reported offence, explain why speeding is a community concern and provide guidance to encourage safer driving behaviours.

During 2025, Community Speed Watch activity took place in the following Rutland locations:

  • Essendine and Belmesthorpe (joint scheme)
  • Clipsham
  • Little Casterton
  • Langham
  • Ridlington

Road safety remains a priority for both Rutland County Council and Leicestershire Police and is a key concern for residents.

Councillor Christine Wise, Rutland County Council Portfolio Holder for Transport, Environment and Communities, said:

“Community Speed Watch gives residents a real voice in tackling speeding where they live. What we hear from local volunteers helps us decide where further action is needed, including where Speed Indicator Devices are installed as part of Phase 2 of our road safety upgrade programme."

“By working alongside our communities and partners, we are reinforcing the message that speed limits matter whilst helping to make Rutland’s roads safer for everyone. This data can be vital in targeting our limited resources, and having the most impact on reducing excessive speed"

The LLRRSP will continue to support increased police presence on Rutland’s roads to tackle speeding, mobile phone distraction behind the wheel, drivers not wearing seatbelts, dangerous driving, and drink and drug driving as seasonal conditions change.

Rutland County Council would like to thank all parish volunteers and partner organisations who took part in the 2025 Community Speed Watch Scheme and commend them for their dedication to improving road safety in their communities.

Rutland communities interested in finding out more about the scheme, or in being considered for future Community Speed Watch activity during 2026, are encouraged to contact Rutland County Council’s Transport Team by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
